The PE Premium is funding which is given to every primary school in the country by the Government, to allow schools to build a legacy for the 2012 Olympic Games.  Schools are asked to use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.

You can see from the plans below how we spent this funding last year and what impact it has had, also what our plans are for this year.

Swimming

From the 2017-18 academic year, there is a new condition requiring schools to publish how many pupils within their Year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.  This condition has been added in response to recommendations from the Swim Group, who reviewed curriculum swimming and water safety in primary schools.

At St Nicholas, we appreciate the importance of swimming and therefore offer the children a year-long swimming course in Year 5 of 45 minutes per week.  Their progress is carefully monitored and it was this that raised the concern that a relatively high percentage of our complete non-swimmers did not meet the expected target of swimming 25m competently by the end of Year 6.  To address this, every year a targeted group of Year 4 children are now offered a term of early intervention swimming lessons in Year 4 which aims to increase their confidence and proficiency prior to their Year 5 block lessons.  This initiative has been effective and in the few cases where it has not, the children are offered further lessons during Year 6.

Our figures for the 2021-22 Year 6 cohort are:

Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: 65%

Use a range of strokes effectively: 65%

Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations: 25%
